Adults with POS Health Insurance

Service Area: Reid Health's Service Area
Measurement Period: 2023
This indicator shows the percentage of adults aged 18 years and older that have point-of-service (POS) health insurance coverage.

Why is this important?

Health care in the United States can be very expensive. A single doctor’s office visit may cost several hundred dollars and an average three-day hospital stay can run tens of thousands of dollars (or even more) depending on the type of care provided. Health insurance offers a way to reduce such costs to more reasonable amounts.
The most recent development in managed care is the point-of-service (POS) plan. It encompasses characteristics of both HMO and PPO in an attempt to balance demands for cost containment and freedom of choice. Point-of-service plans use a network of contracted providers, and enrollees to select a primary care physician gatekeeper who controls specialty referrals.
